Determine your phase and connection

The kWh meter in your meter cupboard shows which connection you have. 230V means single-phase and (3 x 230V) 400V means three-phase. You can also find the type of connection in the annual statement from your energy supplier.

Count the number of circuits

In the fuse box you will see switches (also called fuses or circuit breakers), each representing one circuit. Count the switches to determine the number of circuits.

If you want to connect more electrical appliances, you may need extra circuits. Want to know exactly how many circuits you need? I am happy to think along with you!

When is it time for a new fuse box?

Most fuse boxes are replaced because they are outdated or no longer meet current requirements. Think of too few circuits, missing earth leakage protection or an installation that has simply reached the end of its life.

Modern homes place higher demands on their electrics. More appliances, higher loads, EV chargers, solar panels. An old fuse box is often not designed for this.

A new fuse box gives you better protection, a clearer overview and room for future extension.

When should a fuse box be replaced?

A fuse box is usually replaced when it is outdated, has no residual current devices (RCDs) or does not offer enough room for extension. This often happens in homes where electric cooking, solar panels or an EV charger are added. Circuits that trip regularly or old fuse boxes with screw-in fuses can also be a reason to renew the installation.

How long does it take to replace a fuse box?

In most homes, replacing a fuse box takes about 3 to 5 hours. The power is switched off temporarily during the work. Additional work, such as adjusting wiring or extensions in the meter cupboard, can take extra time.

Do I need a three-phase connection for induction cooking?

In many situations a three-phase connection is not needed for a standard induction hob. For heavier hobs, large cooking zones or combinations with an oven, EV charger or solar panels, a three-phase connection can be a sensible choice.

How does a conversion from single-phase to three-phase work?

The grid operator converts the connection after an application via mijnaansluiting.nl. The fuse box must be suitable and prepared for three-phase in advance. The work on the grid connection itself is carried out by Liander, Stedin or Enexis, depending on the region.

What should I take into account while the fuse box is being replaced?

The power is switched off temporarily during the work. It is wise to shut down computers and servers properly beforehand and to charge laptops. Internet and Wi-Fi will also be down for a while, so a mobile hotspot can be handy if you work from home. Make sure the meter cupboard is easy to reach and cleared before the work starts. A cup of coffee is always appreciated, especially before the power goes off 😉

What does it cost to replace a fuse box in Hilversum?

The costs depend on the number of circuits and any extensions such as a cooker circuit, solar panels or an EV charger. For standard replacements I work with fixed all-in prices, including materials, installation and warranty. That way you know where you stand in advance.
